Villanova Wins 2nd Championship in 3 Years
A couple nights ago Villanova beat Michigan for their second championship in 3 years. They were dominating this tournament - winning margins were 26, 23, 12, 12, 16, and 17.
The Big Ten yet again failed to win a championship. Since 2000 when Michigan State won, the Big Ten conference has now lost the national championship game 7 times and has 6 other Final Four appearances. (Wisconsin also appeared in the year 2000, so 7 including that year).
Starting with the year 2000, here are all the conferences that have appeared in a final four:
(*) = Memphis from 2008 had to vacate their national championship appearance, and Louisville from the Big East had to vacate their 2012 final four appearance and 2013 national championship, so these totals are 1 less than the values in the table according to official NCAA records.
As you can see, the Big Ten has the most appearances over the last 19 years, but only 1 championship. The ACC has 1 less appearance but 6 more championships. In the last 19 years, there are only 3 conferences with multiple championships - the ACC, Big East, and SEC. And if you exclude the Big Ten (counting only the last 18 years), there are only 5 conferences with a championship at all - adding in UConn from the American (they won twice, once from the Big East and once from the American) and Kansas from the Big 12.
The most impressive item for me on the list is the Big East going 6-0 in national championship games. The ACC is 7-2, which is pretty impressive as well. Far better than the Big Ten at 1-7.
