Great Wolf Lodge 2019
For the past few years, including this year, we have made a trip up to Wisconsin Dells just after the calendar turns to the new year. School is out still and the hotel room rates drop significantly right after January 1st, so it's a great time to go.
We had a fun time like always. For the past few years we've gone to Great Wolf Lodge. I'm wondering if we're starting to get a little bit of "been there, done that" with that hotel, though. The indoor pools are great. There's a central entrance which means you can easily see how crowded everything is and make the decision on whether to go to the pools or do something else. Thursday we went in the morning, then kept an eye out until the crowds went down in the late afternoon before returning.
There's also MagiQuest and a small arcade, but that's really about it at Great Wolf. I'm thinking that (assuming we do this again in 2020), we might choose a different location. Unfortunately, there are only so many indoor water parks in the Dells. Kalahari, Great Wolf, Wilderness, and Mt Olympus might be it. When I've looked around, Kalahari has been the most expensive by far - not even close in price to the other 3. Mt Olympus is the least expensive by far, but the indoor activities are pretty slim - the water park is the smallest and the activities are geared more for very young children.
That leaves us pretty much with staying where we've been going or switching to Wilderness. Also, next year January 1st will be on a Wednesday, which changes the dynamic a bit. This year we went up on Wednesday the 2nd and returned on Friday the 4th - two nights, which is just about right, and no expensive night (January 1st or a weekend night). Next year, with the 1st being on a Wednesday, we'll either have to stay from the 1st to the 3rd (Wednesday to Friday) or do something different. It probably depends on when the school district decides to have winter break.
